Robert Crais - The Watchman (2007)

Reviewed by David J. Montgomery

Robert Crais is back. After having lost some of his mojo in recent years, The Watchman returns the author to his former glory. Best known for his series featuring private eye Elvis Cole, Crais ventures for the first time into the heart and mind of Cole's sidekick, Joe Pike, and the results are spectacular.

Pike is the kind of man that, once he takes on a job, he's sure to see it through, regardless of the cost. So when he's hired to protect the life of a spoiled heiress, he's committed to her, no matter what. When the bullets start flying and the bodies start falling, that only increases his resolve to save her life, even if it might cost him his own.

Crais succeeds at writing high-stakes, fast-moving plots as few authors can. He also has the ability to create likeable, multi-faceted characters that earn the audience's sympathy and affection. The Watchman achieves the rare combination of being a whirlwind of action and suspense, while still including moments so moving they'll take your breath away.
