David Morrell - Creepers (2005)

Reviewed by David J. Montgomery

"The places you're not supposed to be." Those are the most interesting places of all to the "creepers," urban explorers who investigate the secrets of abandoned buildings. One such group has set its sights on the Paragon Hotel, the grandiose Art Deco creation of an eccentric millionaire on the Jersey shore that has since fallen upon hard times.

That is the basis for David Morrell's latest thriller, Creepers, a story of non-supernatural horror that is scarier and more spine-tingling than any ghost story. Frank Bellenger, a reporter, hooks up with a group of creepers to explore the Paragon, ostensibly to write an article on their activities for the New York Times, but in reality he has a different, darker agenda.

Taking place in real time over the course of a single, terrifying night, Creepers is as tense and chilling as any of the works from masters of the genre like Dean Koontz and Stephen King. Don't schedule an early-morning meeting if you're planning to read this book, because Creepers is likely to keep you up all night.
