J.A. Konrath - Blood Mary (2005)

Reviewed by David J. Montgomery

Midsummer is the perfect time to break out a book and head for the lake, and there is no better choice for that than J.A. Konrath's Bloody Mary, the second in a series featuring Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels of the Chicago Police.

After her splashy debut in Whiskey Sour last year, Jack is back for another funny, creepy go-round with a vicious bad guy, this one a serial killer who strews body parts about the city.

In addition to the mystery, the book also gives a hilarious look into Jack’s dysfunctional personal life. Between her invalid mother, horny ex-husband and psychotic cat, it’s no wonder she’d rather spend her time on the street chasing murderers.

Combining laugh-out-loud humor and gruesome suspense into one book is no easy task. Somehow, though, Konrath pulls it off, and in the process has produced one of the summer’s most enjoyable reads.
