Kate White - Over Her Dead Body (2005)

Reviewed by David J. Montgomery

Kate White’s latest novel is a charming mystery with a light-hearted approach. The book’s heroine, Bailey Weggins, is a true-crime reporter who takes a job working for a People-like magazine called Buzz, only to have her universally hated boss murdered a few days later.

Bailey is given the task of covering the murder for the magazine, a plum assignment, but one that lands her in a heap of danger when unknown people start trying to scare her off the story.

At the same time, she has her hands full with other problems as well, including a love life gone awry, backstabbing coworkers, conniving paparazzi, and a reality TV star that’s completely out of control.

White, the editor-in-chief of Cosmo, knows the magazine world backwards and forwards, and the juicy “behind the scenes” story and gossip are the best parts of the book. Some of the writing could have been trimmed a little to make the plot flow more smoothly, but with its sharp characters and witty humor, Over Her Dead Body is a winner.
