Joseph R. Garber - Whirlwind (2004)
A thriller that deserves a spot on your reading schedule is Joseph R. Garber's outstanding Whirlwind, the latest book from the author of Vertical Run (1995).
When two low-level Russian spies inadvertently infiltrate a secret U.S. installation and steal a revolutionary new technology, the nation's intelligence establishment is thrown into panic. Only one man seems capable of retrieving the secrets and neutralizing the threat. Unfortunately, Charlie McKenzie has been betrayed by his compatriots and thrown out of the service in disgrace.
McKenzie reluctantly agrees to return and run the operation -- at a high price, of course. Thus begins a spine-tingling game of cat and mouse, with a surprising twist on who is the predator and who the prey.
Garber takes his time between books, having produced only three in the past 15 years. No doubt this frustrates a lot of his readers, but when the result is this good it is clearly worth the wait.
