Janet Evanovich - Metro Girl (2004)
Janet Evanovich has won millions of readers with her charming series featuring Stephanie Plum, a hapless bounty hunter. In her newest novel, Metro Girl, she strikes out into slightly new territory with a different character and locale, and if it still feels like the same type of book, that's probably OK with her fans.
Alexandra "Barney" Barnaby, the metro girl of the book's title, hurries to South Florida after receiving a desperate phone call from her wayward brother. There she finds that he has mysteriously vanished.
Barney begins to poke into her brother's disappearance, helped by Sam Hooker, a handsome race car driver, who annoyingly refers to himself in the third person as "NASCAR guy." They are joined in their quest by a pair of pistol-packing Cuban cigar rollers and a flamboyantly gay interior designer.
At times it's a little too silly. But for the most part Evanovich pulls it off. Metro Girl is a fast-moving and entertaining bit of fluff.
