Ray Shannon - Firecracker (2004)
For those who like something a little less serious on their reading list, comes a hilarious farce by Ray Shannon (who sometimes hides under the name of Gar Anthony Haywood).
Firecracker is a bang-up novel that would make Elmore Leonard proud, the kind of machinegun-paced, witty romp of a thriller that keeps your fingers flying on the pages, a smile on your face all the while.
The plot, involving a pro football player with shady friends, an ex-cop posing as a sportswriter, and a pregnant woman holding a $10,000,000 betting slip, is never believable, but who really cares?
This is a book written to entertain, not to enlighten, and it does that very well. Firecracker is a great way to take your mind off your troubles.
