Jonnie Jacobs - Intent to Harm (2004)
Although Intent to Harm is the sixth book in Jonnie Jacobs' Kali O'Brien series, this fine writer has somehow escaped much notice before now.
O'Brien is a San Francisco lawyer newly returned to private practice and keen to build business. Eager to secure a new client, she accepts a request for a clandestine meeting in Lake Tahoe with a potential client. Going into the rendezvous, all O'Brien knows is that a woman named Betty has something she needs to get off her chest, and the meeting must be kept very secret.
Before Betty even has a chance to begin her story, gunfire erupts, leaving Betty dead and O'Brien wounded. Although she hardly knows where to begin her investigation, O'Brien cannot walk away from Betty's case, as she has been inextricably involved and her life may still be in danger.
Intent to Harm is an excellent investigative thriller, with rapid and suspenseful pacing, a likable heroine, and great secondary characters. Never mind John Grisham; read Jonnie Jacobs instead.
