Valerie Block - None of Your Business (2003)

Valerie Block's None of Your Business is a wicked satire that pleases with both acerbic wit and a fascinating plot.

Mitch Greiff is an accountant for wealthy celebrities who disappears one day, apparently taking $103 million of his clients' money with him. The problem is that everyone who knows Mitch says he isn't smart or bold enough to pull off such an interesting crime.

The detectives at the NYPD Computer Crimes squad think he was helped by his longtime assistant, the secretly bald and openly frumpy Erica King. The problem is that she's even duller than her boss, not to mention the least personable and sociable person on earth.

As it turns out, that unattractive package contains a very gifted mind, highly skilled at the arts of deception. In particular, King is an expert at creating false identities -- not to mention stealing people's money.

Block does a marvelous job of skewering the egos of rich socialites, haughty accountants, oversexed cops and just about everybody else who passes through her sights. Not only is None of Your Business a terrific mystery story; it'll also be the funniest book you've read all year.
