Alice Blanchard - The Breathtaker (2003)
A well-written, authentic and suspenseful mystery for holiday gift-giving is The Breathtaker by Alice Blanchard. A relatively new writer, Blanchard is ready to take on the established authors in the genre with a book filled with polished prose and gripping tension.
Charlie Grover, police chief of Promise, Okla., bears many scars, both internal and external. A tough and fair lawman, he is a single parent struggling to raise a teenage daughter. He is also a son trying to forgive his father for a lifetime of mistakes.
The villain is a serial killer who preys on victims during tornado strikes. An improbable plot, sure, but it creates scenes with lots of tension and atmosphere. This book was a joy to read and a good scare to boot.
