Daniel Silva - A Death in Vienna (2004)

One of the best of the post-Ludlum crop of thriller writers is Daniel Silva, a CNN producer turned best-selling novelist. Silva knows his territory well, as he has ably demonstrated in each of his half dozen books.

The third in a trilogy about "the unfinished business of the Holocaust," A Death in Vienna brings back Mossad agent Gabriel Allon, whom we first met in The Kill Artist, and sends him on the trail of one of Hitler's last living lieutenants: Erich Radek, the man charged with covering up the genocide of the Final Solution.

Allon is an art restorer in his public life and he has the soul of an artist, a depth and passion that make him one of the most fascinating and entertaining characters in the genre.

Also notable are the beautifully written descriptions of the settings in Silva's plots. As A Death in Vienna jumps from Israel to Argentina, to Rome and, yes, Vienna, the author paints a vivid portrait of these diverse and storied cities. His hero isn't the only artist at work in Silva's books.
